Uppslagsverket Encarta upphör i oktober

Nästa på tur att ge upp när det gäller sök är uppslagsverket Encarta från Microsoft.

“On October 31, 2009, MSN® Encarta® Web sites worldwide will be discontinued, with the exception of Encarta Japan, which will be discontinued on December 31, 2009″.

Det många nu hävdar är att Wikipedia konkurrerat ut Encarta. T.ex. New York Times:

“…acknowledging what everyone else realized long ago: it just couldn’t compete with Wikipedia, a free, collaborative project that has become the leading encyclopedia on the Web”.

NY Times hänvisar till FAQ-sidan på Encarta där man skriver:

““The category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past. As part of Microsoft’s goal to deliver the most effective and engaging resources for today’s consumer, it has made the decision to exit the Encarta business.”

För mångfaldens skull är det synd att Encarta nu upphör och dessvärre måste jag upphöra med mitt sökexempel som jag brukar ha på min sökkurser där jag jämför gratis resurser (Encarta) med liknande resurser som kostar att använda (Landguiden). Fast jag kan ju fortsätta till oktober.
